 The media and swine flu

All over the world the media talked about the death tolls in Mexico due to swine flu. People were getting sick quickly and the disease seemed to be spreading fast.

From the way the whole incident was portrayed by the media it seemed that we were at the beginnings of a devastating global pandemic.

There was an air of nervous anticipation that enveloped the whole world regarding the swine flu problem. A nervousness that had been generated by the media.
But the situation soon settled down and swine flu proved not to be as frightening as the media had made it out to be.

So why did the media over-hype the threat of swine flu?

The media were in a no-win situation regarding the swine flu problem. They could have broadcasted a more restrained picture of swine flu. But what would have happened if it had been more severe? What if the causalities had continued to grow exponentially?
The same conspiracy theorists would have turned on the media, probably stating that they were all in collusion and were attempting to hide a possible swine flu epidemic.
The media had justifiable reasons for broadcasting the onset of swine flu the way they did. There were strong historical reasons for taking swine flu seriously. Pandemics have the potential to cause enormous human devastation. Swine flu could have been the worst type of pandemic (and still could be if a second wave of infections hits during the winter months). How would the media have looked if they hadn’t given it sufficient coverage?

 Further swine flu conspiracies

There has been mention in certain circles that swine flu is man-made. Though this sounds even more ridiculous than the media based conspiracies there might be some truth in this particular rumor.
I personally don’t believe that it was deliberately made in a lab by some aging disgruntled scientist. But I do believe that it could have been created inadvertently through the adverse activities of man.
There is strong evidence to suggest that the disease originated in a region of Mexico where large intensive pig farming is practiced. The conditions in these farms are said to be atrocious. Basically it is highly possible that these extreme farming techniques could have created the ideal environment to harbor the development of a new hybrid form of swine-stroke-human influenza.
